Chicken with Garlic Sauce
Let the butter do the work on this easy dinner. Mix butter, garlic, and a few spices then you will have a tantalizing dinner that’s not only good but impressive enough to serve guests (even the in-laws!).
I always love a recipe where you can put everything into the slow cooker at once and not think about it again until it’s time to serve dinner; this recipe is one of those!
Garlic butter chicken takes only 10 minutes to prep and you will be all set! You will end up with juicy, tender chicken in a delicious, garlic butter sauce that will make you want to lick your plate.
Slow Cooker Chicken and Potatoes
Garlic butter chicken and potatoes is an easy dinner recipe to whip up any night of the week. All you have to do is mix melted butter with a few common spices, add chicken, layer veggies and drizzle the delectable butter sauce over everything. This is a true fix-it-and-forget-it meal that will only take minutes to prep. The crockpot does all the hard work!
1. Mix melted butter with garlic and spices.
2. Place chicken breasts on the bottom of the slow cooker. Pour 1/3 of the butter mixture over the chicken breasts.
3. Layer potatoes and veggies on top of the chicken, making sure to place the potatoes spread apart so they have room to cook. You don’t want raw potatoes at dinnertime.
4. Pour the remaining butter mixture over veggies and potatoes.
5. Add chicken broth over everything.
6. Cook for 3 – 4 hours on high or 6 hours on low.
Can I Use Chicken Thighs Instead?
Yes. If your family prefers dark meat, you can use chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts in this recipe. The thighs will need a little less time to cook, so check them at 3 hours on high or 5 hours on low. Garlic butter chicken thighs are just as delicious as the chicken breasts!
Tips for Making Crockpot Garlic Butter Chicken
- Make sure to cut your potatoes in quarters. Since potatoes take longer to cook you want to make sure to quarter them, allowing them to cook in the same amount of time as the chicken and carrots.
- You can swap the carrots or potatoes for any veggies that your family likes. Another couple of good vegetables that work well with the garlic butter sauce are green beans or broccoli.
- Know your slow cooker. Every slow cooker is different and cooks differently. If this is your first time making this, you should start checking on the chicken early. No one wants to gnaw on dry chicken.
With all the amazing Crockpot chicken recipes out there, it can be hard to choose which one to make for dinner. This garlic butter chicken is a winner; that’s for sure! The chicken is so tender it will fall apart with just a little touch and the garlic butter sauce is absolutely delicious.
So there you have it! A delicious and easy, garlic butter chicken recipe that can be made in the crockpot. Whether you are short on time or want to let your slow cooker do all the work, this recipe is a winner for any family dinner.

Allison Treadwell says
Hope it was wonderful!!!
Beth says
Is it thyme leaves or ground thyme? I don’t want to fudge it up.
Allison Treadwell says
Hi Beth! Thanks for asking! It is ground thyme. I will make that more clear in the recipe. Hope you love it!
Beth says
Thank you and thank you for responding so quickly. I can’t wait to try this.
Teresa says
We used chicken thighs since that was what we had & it was wonderful. Since there is only 2 of us, we cut the recipe down with no problems. We are adding this recipe to our rotation.
Allison Treadwell says
Hi Teresa! So happy you enjoyed it and good to know on the cutting the recipe down. Always good to know how it works;)
Pat says
Going to try the garlic chicken tommorrow. Thans for the recipe
Allison Treadwell says
Hi Pat! Hope you enjoy it. It’s my husband’s favorite!
Madi says
I made this tonight and even added more of the seasoning it called for but it was still very very bland. The chicken did turn out juicy but the flavor was just there.
Madi says
Just wasn’t there***
Kori says
This was delicious! I substituted the thyme for rosemary.
Will definitely make again
Allison Treadwell says
Hi Kori! I’m so happy you like it! I actually love rosemary especially with chicken so I will have to try that.
Amber says
Did you mince fresh garlic or use the dried minced garlic from the spice aisle? Thanks!
Allison Treadwell says
Hi Amber! I like to use fresh garlic for this recipe and mince it. It adds more flavor that way!
Charlie says
Hi. Can you freeze this?
Allison Treadwell says
Hi Charlie! Yes, you can freeze this! Once you are ready to eat it just it in the fridge overnight them cook it in the over or microwave to reheat.

Recipe says 14.5oz chicken broth but in direction it says half a cup. Any recommendations?
Allison Treadwell says
Hi! I will update it to say 14.5oz. It gives more of a buttery sauce at the end with more chicken broth. I had originally only used 1/2 cup in the first version of the recipe.
R says
Thanks for the reply. I ended up using about 10oz and it came out delicious. Wife and kids loved it too. Thanks again!
Murphy says
Hi, could I make this using frozen boneless skinless chicken breasts?
Pat Fitzmaurice says
Is there any value in sautéing the chicken first end then follow directions,
Allison Treadwell says
Hi Pat, If you use chicken thighs that would be a great way to add even more flavor. I would worry about over cooking the chicken breasts unless you did a really brief sautee.
Debi says
The family enjoyed this version with bone in, chicken thighs, skinless and seared. Halved the potatoes.
They tell me they would eat it again. I thought it was a bit boring, but checked all the boxes of quick, few ingredients, simple. On my short list of ‘dump and go.’
Susan Richards says
Very tasty dish, really enjoyed
Allison Treadwell says
So happy you enjoyed it!
Sherry Farrell says
Can you use frozen chicken
Allison Treadwell says
Yes! You will just need to cook it longer.
Sydney Maresca says
The recipe calls for 14.5 ounces chicken broth and you mention adding only 1/2 cup to the crockpot. What do you do with the remaining chicken broth?
Allison Treadwell says
I like to add more to give it more buttery sauce at the end but that is just my preference.
Patricia says
If you have leftover chicken (or any other kind) broth or stock just freeze in ice cube tray or other small serving size. You’ll always have what you need on hand and nothing goes to waste.
